Story
Synopsis: A meteorite crashes into Earth, causing a large typhoon and the awakening of Godzilla and Battra. The typhoon unearths a buried Mothra egg on Infant Island, which is discovered by three explorers investigating on behalf of the National Environment Planning Bureau and the Marutomo Company. They also meet the Cosmos, two tiny fairies that tell them about an ancient civilization that worshipped Mothra and was destroyed by the "black Mothra" Battra after creating a series of 12 weather control machines. The company decides to ferry Mothra's egg back to Japan, but is interrupted when Godzilla and Battra appear, causing the egg to hatch and a three way battle between the monsters to commence. Godzilla and Battra continue to battle undersea and are swallowed up by an undersea volcano while the baby Mothra swims to safety. The Marutomo Company of course tries to steal the Cosmos for financial gain, which only brings Mothra into the heart of Tokyo, where it weaves a cocoon. Godzilla and Battra reemerge, with Battra and Mothra appearing in their Imago forms and battling over the skies of Yokohama. Godzilla soon arrives as well, and the two Mothras call a truce and work together to carry Godzilla out to sea, at the cost of Battra's life. Mothra then flies off into space to fulfill a promise made to Battra to destroy another meteor expected to impact the Earth at the end of the millennium.

Theme: The film nominally carries an environmentalism message, but it's written quite poorly as the trigger to all of the various monsters awakening is an extraterrestrial threat which has nothing to do with pollution. The movie likes to hammer on this theme, but it's not clear how serious it's meant to be taken when such a glaring flaw in the message is present.

English Versions
Godzilla and Mothra: The Battle for Earth (April 28th, 1998): Uncut international export dub by Omni Productions in Hong Kong, made presumably sometime in 1993. When released on VHS by Sony, however, the original superimposed title was replaced with the obnoxious "Battle for Earth" one, and as always the end credits were clipped out.
