The Dorats are weird because they represent an attempt to try and make sense out of a monster who's design was based on a fantasy film. Even when you take into account that they were originally explicitly connected to the corpse of the original King Ghidorah, the notion that you could take three one-headed things, drop a nuke on them, and get a one three-headed thing, is still incredibly ridiculous. This full on doesn't work without allowing for miles upon miles of belief to be suspended because of the alien genetics of Ghidorah, and we really have to do that for it to make sense. It seems like Ghidorahs are similar enough to Earthlings that we might expect them to be like us with DNA or RNA coding and carbon as a base... but like radiation doesn't do that to things on Earth, so we probably need to throw all that out. It's also wild because the Dorats are designer pets made by genetic engineers, human engineers, meaning whatever Ghidorah's biological coding is made out of humans had to sequence and understand it, which again implies something similar to DNA and RNA. To make things even worse, we know from Final Wars that Kaiser Ghidorah has M base which... well, there you go. I guess you really gotta squint.
The weirdest part, though, is that removed from that context the existence of the Dorats is completely ridiculous conceptually. This is a monster created from the genes of something incredibly dangerous and turned into cute freaky biotech pets for futurian cyberpunk weirdos... and then taken back in time, dipped in radiation, and turned BACK into that exact same monster they were made from in the first place. What the hell is the point? It's a waste of time, and what kills me is that if this logic worked the other way aroond, where the Dorats were originally developed as an independent idea and then later the connection to the original Ghidorah was drawn, then I can wrap my head aroond it. But it wasn't! The cold open was the discovery of King Ghidorah's body from the start, it was snipped afterwards, meaning the idea was always to make a monster that was different from both end points when said end points were the same damn thing! This makes the 2nd generation King Ghidorah just a clone of the original, but the long way aroond. And that's weird. I will say, though, that I think the idea of genetically engineered designer pets from the future is really cool and interesting, especially with the added dimension that they're created using a space monster that eats planets as a starting point. That one it's own right there is a solid Godzilla movie, you don't need anything more than that, that concept alone could carry an entire film, but instead the Dorats are merely a footnote in a larger story aboot the asset bubble. I don't know what Omori was smoking back then, but I sure want some.

History (VS-1): A type of psychic pet developed through genetic engineering in the 23rd century using the genetic material of King Ghidorah as a base. These three were brought back in time to 1944 and left on Lagos Island, where they somehow managed to survive for 10 years before nuclear testing on the nearby Bikini Atoll mutated and fused them into a new King Ghidorah (2nd).
History (VS-2/3/4): The Dorats appeared on Lagos Island in 1944 after being released by the time travelers. However, because of alterations to the timeline made during the 20th century, they were never created in any of the subsequent 23rd century futures, leaving the Dorats parachronic relics out of time.
